Stanford

The tranquil village of Stanford is situated along the fertile banks of the Klein River approximately 90 minute's drive time from Cape Town and 15 minutes from Hermanus.  More than 150 years old, Stanford is steeped in history with several beautifully restored historical buildings throughout the village including the Anglican and Dutch Reformed churches amongst many others.

Several award winning vineyards can be found in the valley and along the fertile river banks alongside impressive ventures like the Birkenhead Micro Brewery and the Klein River Cheese Farm where you can savour several of their cheeses before buying.

• Bird watching
  
  Stanford in known to be a bird watchers paradise (over 400 bird species) as is Oak Grove Farm.  The river banks are famous in the early morning for spotting your favourite birds not forgetting Fairhill Private Nature Reserve.
• Fishing - fresh water and surf and sea
  
  Vaalvlei Farm trout fishing
  Experience excellent fly fishing for rainbow trout, brown trout, bass and Mozambique Tilapia (Blue kurper) in two spring fed dams. Kids can fish for bluegill and tilapia in the smaller dam. Float tubes and waders welcome and only barbless hooks should be used.
  Injured fish will be charged at R60 p/kg. The entrance of Vaalvlei Farm is left opposite our main entrance gate.

• Hiking
  Hiking at Oak Grove Farm or in any of the surrounding Nature Reserves is a must when visiting.  The area abounds in the finest fynbos which stretches in a multicoloured carpet as far as the eye can see.

• Whale Watching in the Overberg's Cape South Coast
  Hermanus, a 20 minutes drive from us, is known as the heart of the whale coast, this coastal resort offers the best land based whale watching in the world. Southern Right Whales visit Walker Bay from July until December every year. About 60 to 100 of these magnificent animals come here from Antarctica to calf. Tourists are often treated with close up displays as these creatures often come to within 10 meters of the coast. Ask the Tourist Bureau in Stanford for more info about whale watching.
