An African Story

We have always loved the Overberg because of its nature and its people. After a long search we finally came across Oak Grove Farm and it was spectacularly beautiful, but also pretty abandoned. However, it certainly was the right choice, with its stunning views stretching all the way to the Hermanus Lagoon and its proximity to Stanford. For us it is the best place on earth.
We decided to build Rooibos House to accommodate us while on holiday in South Africa and which we would let as self-catering accommodation for the rest of the time.
When building the new main house we utilized the skills of South African friend Jason Woest as our on-site project manager. He checked all details, bought up some exciting materials from derelict nearby farm buildings and scouted for old Oregon pine. We felt it should be a house with the kind of rich, warm atmosphere that can only be obtained by using old materials. We flew over from Europe now and then, and more than once we ruined Jason’s day and had to make up by dragging him to places where good food and wine would make his life bearable again!
At the very beginning of 2006 our English partners came over for holiday and for the last stage of the work. It was time for interior decorating, making a driveway, upgrading electricity, improving our natural spring water supply etc. It has cost them hours of talking, calling and driving, but at the end of the day there was always the incredible sunset and the occasional blow-out in one of the cosy Stanford pubs or restaurants.
Now, a few years later, we welcome you to enjoy the result of our work: a beautiful farm offering a variety of birds, exquisite views, beautiful nature and peace – a more than magnificent place to stay.
